There are a lot of things that contribute to good nails and hair. Various proteins, vitamins and minerals like calcium, vitamins A and D, and things like gelatin are all good things for nails and hair.
Also, anything that makes your skin better will help to improve your hair, since your follicles are in your skin. And all of this, simply put, means good nutrition and hydration will result in healthy hair and nails.
You can go the ';easy'; way and believe things like Pantene or whatever product will improve your hair, but they only improve the appearance of the hair already on your head. They do nothing to improve the nature of your hair as it grows.
I know one trick that various women use is to take prenatal vitamins. It usually helps with hair and nails. Wouldn't recommend it for men, though. What foods are good for your nails and hair?
Gelatin is very good for hair and nails. Simply eating Jell-O or similar gelatin products are very good for you(you can even sprinkle powdered gelatin on ice cream and add to drinks), as well as making sure that you supplement your diet with Calcium and Yogurt - especially, if you're anything like me, and have a poor diet! :) You can get Calcium supplements in a small chocolate chew if you have dislike milk or yogurt - very nice product - and everyone likes Jell-O, right? :)
hope this helps,
