Is it indicated to trim my parakeet's nails?

I read on a site (Animal Adventure Inc.) that it is, but I was wondering that, if it really is, how should I do it? I have him for 2 and a half years and I've never done that so far.Is it indicated to trim my parakeet's nails?
For the smaller birds, if you get a perch designed to wear down the birds' nails, you wont have much of an issue. If the nails seem long, just get a nail trimmer from the pet store and trim just the tip off the nail. You will be able to see (in white nails at least) where the blood vessel is (the dark thing in the middle) and don't cut through that or your bird will bleed and can possibly bleed to death! When you go buy the trimmer, get some styptic powder so that if you accidentally do cut the vessel, you can stop the bleeding.

Another way to trim them is to go to a vet. It usually only costs about $7 to get them trimmed and you can get the wings clipped too!Is it indicated to trim my parakeet's nails?
the best way to do it is naturally with a pedi perch. one that's sandpapered. if your bird is standing flat on a table and the nails raise the foot from being completly flat then the nails need to be trimmed. otherwise your bird is fine.
Overgrown nails can be a hazard. Clip them with fingernail clippers, watching for the quick (vein) inside the nail. Since a budgie's nails are white, the vein is visible and the nail should be clipped a little bit past the vein. If the nail bleeds when it is cut, apply a little Quick Stop, a commercial remedy that will stop the bleeding. (If you don't have any, you can stick the nail into a bar of soap, apply flour or cornstarch, or light a match, blow it out and cauterize the nail on the hot head of the match.) Because the birds are so small, it's important to stop the bleeding right away.
